On Friday, July 5th at 6:28pm Connie Canada, the midwife, received a call from you saying that you had lost your mucus plug and that contractions had stared at 4:00pm. Because you were just 36 weeks and 5 days pregnant we really were not sure if this was labor that was going to continue into active labor or just be a dress rehearsal. Connie had you take a bath and see what happened. At 7:37pm you called back and said the contractions had continued and you wanted to come in and see what was going on.
You arrived at the birth center at 8:30pm. Connie and myself were already at the birth center finishing up with another mom. Connie checked you and you were 2-3cm dilated and 70% effaced and baby was at -1 station. You were contracting however they didn’t seem very strong to us. Connie had you go get some dinner and then come back to be checked again. At 10:30pm you came back and Connie checked you again. You were now a good 4cm dilated and 80% effaced. I would say that you were defiantly in labor and you were staying to have your baby.
You were standing out in the living room while we were getting the other mom discharged and cleaning up when your water broke at 11:00pm. I loved the look on our face when you looked down and were all wet and you said “Well I guess my water just broke!” You were in such shock....it was really cute! I got you in the shower at 11:15pm to clean off and also to help you with the contractions because they were now getting pretty strong. You started to feel some pressure so we decided to get you out of the shower and into the tub. Because you were so early and you weren’t thinking you were going to have your baby you had your sweet baby girl with you. She was so tired and just wanted her mommy. I was keeping her occupied in the living room while you were in the shower and I decided tocall my daughter, Maddi, to come and get her to sleep. She has that touch with kids. Maddi walked in at 12:03am and had her asleep within 2 minutes. At 12:05am you started pushing and with just a few pushes and only 2 minutes of pushing you delivered your baby boy in the tub!!
I can’t say enough how much of a privilege it was to be with you and Jonathan during this birth...Such a joy! Alex...you are amazing! I know you wanted a very different experience than your first deliver and I’d say you got just that!!!! You walked in smiling and just about had that smile on your face the whole time. It was really neat to watch you have such control and I remember how amazed you looked right after. You keep saying I can’t believe that just happened!!! Remember this strength.......draw on it when you find yourself in those hard places in life!
Jonathan you were awesome support for Alex! They say the best thing a Dad can do for his kids is to love their mom- your kids are truly blessed!! Thank you both so much for the wonderful privilege of being part of the miracle of birth. Each one is forever a part of my life!
